Steichen was a pioneer in the world of fashion photography. In 1911, he published images of gowns in a magazine called Art et Décoration. These were some of the first modern fashion photographs ever made. He helped people see clothing as a beautiful form of fine art. His work changed how magazines showed style to the world.

Steichen used many different ways to create his art. He began by teaching himself how to paint and sketch. In 1895, he bought his first secondhand Kodak box camera. He even practiced by taking over 1,000 photos of a single cup and saucer. He did this to learn how to use different shades of light and dark.

He also experimented with early color photography using a process called Autochrome Lumière. This helped him blend the skills of a painter with the skills of a photographer.

His journey started in a small village in Luxembourg. He was born Éduard Jean Steichen on March 27, 1879. His parents moved to the United States when he was only eighteen months old. They settled in Hancock, Michigan, to find a better life. Later, the family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1889. There, he learned to speak both English and German. He eventually became a U.S. citizen in the year 1900.

Steichen's career included many famous roles and big achievements. From 1923 to 1938, he was the chief photographer for Vogue and Vanity Fair. He was once called the greatest living portrait photographer in the world. During World War II, he served as a Lieutenant-Commander for the U.S. Navy.

He spent his later years helping others see the beauty in photography. From 1947 to 1961, he led the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art. He organized a huge exhibition called The Family of Man.
