Fine-art photography is a way to use a camera to share a vision.

An artist does not just take a picture of what is there. They use the camera to express an idea or an emotion. This is different from photojournalism, which tells a true story of an event. It is also different from commercial photography used to sell things. In fine art, the photographer is the artist. They want to show their own personal view of the world.

There are many ways an artist can make their work. Some photographers use careful lighting and staging to create a scene.

Others use a method called chemograms.

In this process, an artist paints on the photographic paper. This happens during the processing stage. Because of this, each chemogram is a unique piece of art. Some artists even paint over their photos with oil paints. This blurs the line between painting and photography.

People have worked for a long time to show that photography is art. In 1851, John Edwin Mayall showed early examples of composition photography. Later, people like Julia Margaret Cameron and Oscar Gustave Rejlander practiced this art. In the United States, Alfred Stieglitz helped bring photography into museums.

He was very important for this movement. In the United Kingdom, many people still saw photography as just a craft until 1960. It took time for everyone to see it as a true art form.

Many famous names have shaped this history. Ansel Adams is a very well-known photographer from the 20th century.

He took beautiful photos of nature in places like Yosemite. His art helped people want to protect the land. In the 1970s and 1980s, new stars like Sally Mann and Cindy Sherman arrived. They looked at old subjects like portraits and landscapes with fresh eyes. Today, people even collect fine art photos in special, limited-edition books.

Photography connects to many other parts of our world. It can overlap with fashion photography to create a certain look.

It can even overlap with news photography. Sometimes, a photo taken for a magazine ends up in a museum. Even smartphone apps like Snapchat can be used for art. Whether it is a huge print or a small book, photography helps us see the world through someone else's eyes.
