It was taken by a man named Alfred Stieglitz in 1907. Many people think it is one of the greatest photos ever made. It is special because it shows a real moment in history. It also shows a new way to look at art. Some see it as a document of people traveling. Others see it as a beautiful design of shapes. This photo helped change how people think about photography as an art form.

Stieglitz took the photo while he was on a big ship.

The ship was called the SS Kaiser Wilhelm II. It was one of the fastest ships in the world then. He was traveling from America to Europe with his family. He was staying in a nice room on the upper deck. While walking, he looked down at the steerage area. This was where the lower class passengers stayed on the ship. He saw a scene he liked and ran to get his camera.

He used a camera called a 4x5 Auto-Graflex. This camera used glass plates instead of film.

He only had one glass plate ready to use. He rushed back to the spot to take the picture. He could not see the photo until he reached Paris. A photographer in Paris helped him develop the glass plate. Stieglitz kept the image in its holder to keep it safe. He did not show the photo to the world for many years.

In 1907, many people were moving between countries.

Some people in the photo might have been skilled workers. These were people like woodworkers or marble layers. They often had two-year visas to work in America. Other people in the photo might have been sent back home. The photo shows lines from masts and stairs. These create a design that looks almost like a painting. Some call this style "proto-Cubist" because of the shapes.

This photo is now kept in many famous museums.

You can see it at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is also at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Smithsonian and the Getty Museum have copies too. There are five known versions of this famous image. Some are prints on special Japanese paper. Others are silver prints made later in his life. This single moment on a ship changed art forever.
