Irving Penn was a famous American photographer. He created many kinds of art. He took portraits of famous people. He also took photos of fashion and food.

Penn worked for Vogue magazine. He was known for a very clean style. Most artists used bright lights back then. Penn used simple white or gray backgrounds instead. This gave him control over natural light. It made his images look very modern. He even built a special corner set for his subjects. He photographed many great artists with this set.

Later, Penn tried a new way to make prints. He used a process called platinum printing. This method uses a metal called platinum. It lets him show many shades of gray. He could show everything from pure white to deep black. He even made some prints on aluminum sheets. This gave his art a warm look.

Penn's work is in many big museums today. People still study his great skill. His photos help teach us about art.
