He first trained to be a doctor at Columbia University. He wanted to be a psychiatrist. In 1942, he got sick with tuberculosis. This is a serious lung illness. He had to rest for a long time in New York. He stayed at a place called a sanatorium. This is a place for people to heal. He spent much time reading many books there. This time helped him choose a new path. He decided to become a writer instead of a doctor.

Percy wrote many novels about the South. His first book, *The Moviegoer*, won a big award. It won the National Book Award for Fiction. His stories often look at how people feel in the modern world. He was also a man of deep Catholic faith. He lived in Covington, Louisiana, with his wife and two daughters. He had a lifelong best friend named Shelby Foote. The two men wrote letters to each other for many years. Percy also helped other writers find success. He helped get the book *A Confederacy of Dunces* published.
