It is often called a "non-fiction novel." This means it is a true story told with the style of a regular storybook. The book tells the story of a crime that happened in 1959. It took place in a small farming town called Holcomb, Kansas. The story follows the lives of the victims and the killers. It also looks at the people living in the local community. This book is very important because it helped start a new way of writing. Many people call it a pioneer of the true crime genre.

To write this book, Capote had to do a huge amount of work. He spent six years researching the case. He traveled to Kansas to talk to many different people. He brought his childhood friend, Harper Lee, to help him. Together, they interviewed investigators and local residents. They took thousands of pages of notes to keep track of everything. Capote even interviewed the two men responsible for the crime.

This deep research allowed him to write about the killers' backgrounds. He wanted to show how they thought and felt. This style of writing is known as New Journalism. It involves writing about real events as they are happening.

The crime involved the Clutter family, who lived on a farm. Herbert Clutter was a successful farmer in western Kansas. He was well-liked by the people who worked for him. On November 15, 1959, two men named Richard Hickock and Perry Smith arrived at the home. They were looking for a safe filled with cash. However, the Clutter family did not actually have a safe. They mostly used checks for their business. The men killed the family during the robbery.

They left with very little money and a small radio. This tragedy changed the town of Holcomb forever.

After the crime, the police worked to find the killers. A tip from a man named Floyd Wells helped the investigators. The police arrested Hickock and Smith in Las Vegas on December 30, 1959. The two men were brought back to Kansas for their trial. The trial took place in Garden City from March 22 to March 29, 1960. Both men argued that they were not sane during the crime. However, local doctors decided they were sane enough to stand trial. A jury found them both guilty after only 45 minutes.

Both men were later executed by the state of Kansas in 1965.

This book has had a massive impact on how people think. It is the second-best-selling true crime book in history. It is only behind a book called *Helter Skelter* by Vincent Bugliosi. The story also caused many people to talk about the death penalty. It even led to debates about how mental illness is judged in court. Some people in Holcomb felt the book changed their community. They said they began to trust strangers less after the trial. Even many years later, people still discuss the book and its effects.
