*The Outsiders* is a famous book by S. E. Hinton. She was only fifteen when she began writing it. The story takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It follows a fourteen-year-old boy named Ponyboy Curtis. Ponyboy is a member of a group called the Greasers.

The Greasers are working-class kids. They have a rivalry with a group called the Socs. The Socs are from wealthy families. This conflict leads to many fights between the two groups. The story shows how these young people deal with hard times. It also looks at how they find friendship and meaning.

Many people love this story. It was made into a movie in 1983. It was also made into a stage musical. That musical won four Tony Awards in 2024. Some people tried to ban the book in schools. They did this because of the violence in the story. However, many schools still teach it today. It is even listed as one of the most influential books ever written. The book helps readers understand what it is like to grow up.
