Ruth St. Denis was a pioneer of modern dance in America. She believed that dance was a way to show spiritual ideas.

Her work helped open doors for many other women dancers. She used her body to express deep feelings and mystery. This made her a very important figure in dance history. She even joined the National Museum of Dance Hall of Fame in 1987.

Her journey into dance began with special body exercises. As a young girl, she studied Delsarte gymnastics and voice culture. These lessons helped her learn how to move her body well. In 1892, she saw a performance that changed her life. She called this moment the real birth of her art. Later, she saw a poster of the Egyptian goddess Isis. This image inspired her to create dances about ancient mysteries.

Ruth became a famous solo artist after 1905. She used the stage name St. Denis for her tours. In 1906, she performed a dance called Radha. This piece used Hindu mythology to tell a story. It was a celebration of the five senses. She also performed a Salome dance on Broadway in 1909. These performances helped people become interested in different cultures.

In 1915, Ruth and Ted Shawn started the Denishawn School. This school was a very important place for American modern dance. Students learned many things like ballet without shoes and folk dances. Many famous dancers, such as Martha Graham, studied there. Ruth and Ted also helped create the Jacob's Pillow dance festival. They traveled and performed on the vaudeville stage together.

Ruth continued to teach and lead even after Denishawn ended. In 1938, she started a dance program at Adelphi University. This was one of the first dance departments in a college. She also founded the School of Nataya in 1940. This school focused on teaching Oriental dance. She lived in California and died in Los Angeles in 1968. Her famous solo dances are still performed by people today.
