He helped create a new style called modern dance. This kind of dance was different from old European styles. He wanted dance to be a part of everyday life. Shawn believed dance could connect the body and the spirit. He worked hard to change how people saw movement. His ideas helped many other dancers find their own paths.

Shawn learned to dance in a very surprising way. When he was nineteen, he became very sick with diphtheria. This illness caused him to lose the use of his lower body for a while. During his physical therapy, he was introduced to dance in 1910. He studied with a dancer named Hazel Wallack. Later, he moved to Los Angeles to dance in ballroom shows. These early steps led him to a life of art.

In 1915, Shawn and his wife, Ruth St. Denis, opened the Denishawn School.

They wanted to mix many different styles together. They used moves from Spain and North Africa. They also used styles from Amerindian and American cultures. They taught students to move their upper bodies freely. Famous dancers like Martha Graham studied at their school. This school helped start a new era of American dance.

After Denishawn closed, Shawn started a new group for men. He formed Ted Shawn and His Men Dancers in the early 1930s. He wanted to show that men could be great, athletic dancers. They performed dances like the "Maori War Haka" and "Hopi Indian Eagle Dance."

The group was very successful and traveled a lot. They performed in over 750 cities across North America. They even traveled to big cities like London and Havana.

Shawn also created a special place called Jacob's Pillow. He bought a farm near Lee, Massachusetts, for his dancers.

This farm became a famous school and dance festival. It is a place where people still gather for dance today. Shawn even wrote nine books to help teach others about dance. He was so dedicated that he taught classes until he was eighty. His work is still remembered in museums and dance schools everywhere.
