Charles Weidman was a famous dancer and teacher. He helped start modern dance in America.

Charles Weidman was a pioneer of modern dance in America. He wanted to create a new style of movement. He did not want to follow old traditions. Most dances at that time were like ballet. Ballet dancers try to defy gravity. Weidman wanted to do the opposite. He wanted to use the natural pull of gravity. This made his dance style feel very different. He wanted to dance like a real man or woman in America. His work helped create a whole new way to move.

Weidman studied how the body moves with gravity. He looked at how people fall down. He also studied how people find their balance. This led to a way of moving called suspension. Suspension is when the body resists gravity for a moment. He also used a way of moving called succession. This is when movement flows from one joint to another. His dances included much floor work and jumping. He was also a very great actor. His dances could be very funny or very serious.

Weidman began his career during a time of great change. He started as a dancer for the Denishawn Company. In 1927, he started the Humphrey-Weidman Company. He worked with a dancer named Doris Humphrey. This was during the Roaring Twenties. People felt very excited about the future then. Weidman also worked through the Great Depression and World War II. He choreographed for forty years. His work was meant to show American culture.

Weidman made many different kinds of dances. One famous dance was called Flickers. It was a funny sketch about silent films. It used jerky movements and silly faces. He also made a series called Atavisms. These dances were much more serious. He even made dances about his own family. One series was called On My Mother's Side. He also made large religious works called Oratorios. These were very powerful and grand.

Many great dancers learned from Charles Weidman. He trained famous people like José Limón and Bob Fosse. His ideas are still used by dancers today. It is sometimes hard to see his old dances. Not many were caught on film. Some were written down in a special code called Labanotation. Now, former dancers must use their memory to perform them. Weidman received a Heritage Award in 1970. He joined the Hall of Fame in 1987.
