Writing was a very big job for Michener. He was known for doing careful research before he started. He studied history, culture, and even how the earth was shaped. He used so much paper that his filing system had a hard time keeping up.

Michener's journey as a writer began during World War II. He served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy. He worked as a naval historian in the South Pacific. This job gave him many new ideas for stories. His first big book was *Tales of the South Pacific*. It was published in 1947 when he was 40 years old. This book won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1948. It was later turned into a famous Broadway musical called *South Pacific*.
