It follows a woman named Moll from her birth until she is old. The book claims to be a true account of her life. This means it is written like an autobiography. An autobiography is a story about a person's own life. Many people believe Daniel Defoe wrote this book. He was a famous writer who also wrote Robinson Crusoe in 1719. The first printing did not name an author at all. A bookseller named Francis Noble said Defoe wrote it in 1770.

Scholars study the book as a spiritual autobiography. This is a special kind of story about a person's faith. It follows a pattern of making bad choices and then feeling regret. Some experts, like George Starr, look at how Moll changes. He says she goes through a process called hardening. This means her heart gets tougher as she commits more sins. However, she eventually finds a true conversion experience. This is when a person makes a big change to live a better life. She reunites with her husband and moves to the colonies to start over.
