She is best known for creating the Regency romance genre. These stories are set during the Regency period in England. Her writing often focused on the lives of the wealthy upper class. She used the setting as a very important part of her plots. Many of her characters had modern feelings and ways of thinking. This made her stories feel fresh to her readers. She also wrote many exciting detective stories and thrillers.

To make her worlds feel real, Heyer worked very hard.

She collected many reference books to learn about the past. She kept detailed notes on many different things. She studied old clothes, food, and even how much candles cost. Her notes were sorted into groups like "Dress" or "Prices." She even clipped pictures from magazines to help her work. Some people thought she used too many details. However, others believed this was her greatest skill. This helped her create a true feeling of the time.

Heyer's writing career began in 1921.

She wrote her first novel, The Black Moth, for her brother. He was often weak and stayed at home. Her father helped her get the book published. In 1925, she married a mining engineer named George Ronald Rougier. They lived in many places like Tanganyika and Macedonia.

While living in Africa, she wrote The Masqueraders. She often wrote one romance and one thriller every single year. This steady work helped her become very successful.

Heyer was a very private person.

She believed her private life was only for her family. She refused to give interviews to the press. Even when her books sold very well, she did not seek fame. For example, her book These Old Shades sold 190,000 copies without any ads. This happened during the General Strike of 1926. She did not want to be photographed at work. She wanted her books to be the main focus. This helped her stay focused on her many stories.

Her work connects to other famous writers and history.

She was inspired by the famous author Jane Austen. While Austen wrote about her own time, Heyer wrote about the past. This required Heyer to explain many small details to her readers. She even claimed her words for the Duke of Wellington were real. She wrote about many eras, including the time of William the Conqueror.

Heyer continued writing until she died in July 1974. Many of her books were still being sold then.
