Instead, he found great success playing a "fop." A fop is a silly man obsessed with fashion and manners. He wrote a comedy called *Love's Last Shift* in 1696.

This meant he ran the business side of the stage. In 1730, he was named Poet Laureate, which was a very big honor. However, this job made some writers very angry at him. The poet Alexander Pope even wrote a poem to mock him.

. Cibber also liked to gamble and invested in the South Sea Company. He spent much of his later life visiting famous spa towns.

Cibber left behind a very important book about his own life.

It was called *An Apology for the Life of Colley Cibber*. He wrote it in 1740 to defend his actions to his critics. The book is very chatty and tells many funny stories. It is a great way for us to learn about old theaters. Even though he died in 1757, people still read his words. His life helps us understand how acting changed over time.
