She was born in North Carolina around 1813. At that time, she was held as a slave. Her life was very hard.

One man named Dr. James Norcom was her master.

He treated her very badly. To stay safe, Harriet had to hide. She found a tiny crawlspace under her grandmother's roof.

The space was so small she could not stand. She stayed there for seven years. She bored small holes in the wall for light. She used that light to read the Bible.

In 1842, Harriet escaped to the North. She went to Philadelphia and then New York City. She worked as a nanny for a family. She even wrote a famous book about her life.

Later, she went to the South to help others. She helped start two schools for people who were freed from slavery.
