Anne Brontë was a talented English writer of novels and poems.

She was part of a famous literary family. Her siblings were Charlotte, Emily, and Branwell. Anne is best known for two important books. Her first novel was titled Agnes Grey, published in 1847. Her second novel was The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, published in 1848. Many people call this second book one of the first feminist novels. This means it was an early story about women's rights. Today, both of her books are considered classics of English literature.

Anne's life began with many changes and hard times. She was born on 17 January 1820 in Thornton, England. Her father, Patrick Brontë, was a clergyman. Her mother, Maria, died when Anne was only one year old. Later, two of Anne's older sisters, Maria and Elizabeth, also died. This happened after they attended a school called Cowan Bridge. The school had poor food and many diseases. Because of these losses, Anne's father kept his surviving children at home. They grew up together in the Haworth Parsonage in Yorkshire.

As children, the Brontë siblings were very creative. They spent much of their time playing on the nearby moors. In 1826, their father gave Branwell a set of toy soldiers. The siblings called these soldiers "The Young Men." They used them to build a fantasy world called Angria. They even made tiny, hand-stitched books from scrap paper to tell stories.

Later, Anne and Emily created their own world called Gondal. Anne and Emily were very close and were often called inseparable.

To earn money, Anne worked as a governess. A governess is a teacher who lives with a family. Between 1839 and 1845, she worked for different families. In 1839, she worked at Blake Hall near Mirfield.

This job was very difficult for her. The children were hard to teach, and she felt unsupported. Anne's unhappy time there inspired her book, Agnes Grey. Later, she worked at Thorp Green Hall near York. While there, she wrote a poem called "Lines Composed in a Wood on a Windy Day."

Anne's writing career was also a family effort. In 1846, she and her sisters published poetry together. They used secret names to hide their true identities. They wrote as Acton, Currer, and Ellis Bell.

Sadly, Anne died quite young at the age of 29. Most people believe she died from pulmonary tuberculosis.

After she passed away, her sister Charlotte wrote a special note for her books. Even though her fame was affected by these choices, people still value her work. Her stories remain important parts of history today.
