She is best known for her 1847 novel, Wuthering Heights. This book is now considered a classic of English literature. At first, many critics did not like her work. They thought the characters in her novel were coarse and immoral. To protect her privacy, she originally published her writing under the pen name Ellis Bell.

Later, Emily and her sister Anne focused on a new world called Gondal. Gondal was a fictional island with its own legends. They wrote many poems about this place. These stories helped them develop their skills as writers. The siblings were so close that some people said Emily and Anne were like twins.

Life was not always easy for the Brontë family. When Emily was very young, her mother, Maria, died. The children also attended a school called Cowan Bridge.
