She wrote 20 novels during her life. She also wrote over a thousand short stories and poems.

Montgomery's writing often came from her own life. As a child, she felt very lonely in Cavendish. She made up imaginary friends to feel less alone. She even had a "fairy room" behind a bookcase. These imaginary worlds helped her become a creative person.

She also loved to walk in the countryside. She called her feeling of peace "the flash." This was a moment of deep joy in nature. These moments helped her find many great ideas.

Her life had some very hard times too. Her mother died when Maud was only 21 months old. This left her father feeling very sad. He sent Maud to live with her grandparents.

Later, she lived in the West for a short time. She did not get along well with her stepmother there. She was very happy to return to Prince Edward Island. Living on the island helped her start her writing career.

Montgomery worked hard to become a writer. She was a teacher before she was famous. She used her time teaching to write stories.

In 1897, she began publishing short stories in magazines. Her first poem was called "On Cape LeForce." It was published in a paper called *The Daily Patriot*. By 1908, she published her first big book. It was a hit and went through many printings quickly.

Today, people still love her beautiful stories. Many of her books take place on Prince Edward Island. This island is the smallest province in Canada. Because of her books, many people visit the island. They go to see places like the Green Gables farm.
