She is a novelist, a poet, and even an inventor. Since 1961, she has shared many different kinds of books with the world. She has written 18 novels and 18 books of poetry. She also writes short stories, books for children, and even graphic novels. Her writing explores big ideas like how people use language. She also writes about identity, religion, and how the climate changes. People all over the world read her work to learn about these topics.

Atwood’s writing process often involves looking at what is already real. She writes what is called speculative fiction. This is a type of story that looks at what might happen in the future. In her book The Handmaid's Tale, she uses things that have actually happened in real life. She says she does not include anything that has not happened to somebody somewhere. She also wrote the MaddAddam Trilogy about man-made disasters. These stories look at how new technology might change our world. She believes we can see the future by looking at the tools we are building now.

Her journey as a writer began when she was very young. Atwood started writing poems and plays at the age of six. She grew up in the backwoods of northern Quebec. Her father was an entomologist, which is a scientist who studies insects. This helped her spend much of her childhood in nature. She was a very hungry reader of many different books. She loved reading myths, fairy tales, and even comic books. These early interests helped her become a professional writer by age 16.

Atwood has achieved many great things in her long career. She has won the Booker Prize two times for her books. She also won the Arthur C. Clarke Award and the Governor General's Award. In 2001, she was even added to Canada's Walk of Fame.

She is also an inventor of a tool called the LongPen. This device uses robots to help people write documents from far away. She has taught English at many different universities in Canada and the United States.

Many of Atwood's stories connect to things we already know. She often takes old myths and retells them in new ways. For example, she wrote The Penelopiad, which is a new version of The Odyssey. She also wrote Hag-Seed, which is a modern version of a play by Shakespeare. Some of her books have even been turned into movies or TV shows. Her work helps us think about how people live together. She shows us how stories can help us understand our own world.
