Her father, Robert Evans, managed a large estate called Arbury Hall. Because she was very smart, her father helped her get a good education. He let her use the large library at the estate. This helped her learn about many subjects, including Greek literature. Her books often use ideas from ancient Greek stories. She grew up in a home with many siblings, including a half-sister named Fanny.

As she grew up, her life changed in many ways. In 1836, her mother died, and she became a housekeeper. Later, she moved to Coventry and met new friends. These friends had very different ideas about religion and life. She even traveled to Switzerland to live by a beautiful lake. In 1854, she began living with a man named George Henry Lewes. This was a very unusual choice for that time.
