These signs help you find specific types of stories called genres. Writers call this "genre fiction" or "commercial fiction." They write these stories to fit a certain style. This helps fans of a specific type find new books. These stories often focus on an exciting plot. They aim to entertain the reader through the action. Some people call these "category fiction" books. This is because they fit into categories like mystery or Western.

Different genres offer very different experiences for the reader. Fantasy stories use magic or strange creatures as a main part of the tale. These stories often happen in imaginary worlds. Science fiction looks at the future and new technology. It might explore space travel or life on other planets.

Horror fiction tries to frighten or even disgust the reader. It can use monsters or spooky things to do this. Crime fiction tells stories about criminals and how to catch them. This includes detective stories where someone solves a mystery. Romance novels focus on the love between two people. These stories almost always have an optimistic and happy ending.

People have been grouping stories for a very long time. The idea of genre began with ancient Greek literature. They used different styles for poetry, prose, and drama. For example, they had specific styles for tragedies and comedies. The novel is a newer type of story. Some say the novel began in the early 18th century. Other people believe it has a history of two thousand years. This history goes all the way back to ancient Greece and Rome. Over time, new types like the chivalric romance and opera appeared.

Many different kinds of books are very popular today. In 2007, romance novels made $1.375 billion in the US market. Inspirational literature followed with $819 million in sales. Science fiction and fantasy made about $700 million. Mystery books earned about $650 million that same year. Even classic literary fiction is a big part of the market. It earned $466 million in 2007. Some famous authors have even written genre books using secret names. This is called using a pseudonym.
