Adventure fiction

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Adventure fiction is a special kind of story. These tales focus on danger and excitement. They make the reader feel like they are on a journey. A critic named Don D'Ammassa says danger is the main part. In the book A Tale of Two Cities, the heroes are always in danger. They might be killed or put in prison. This is different from other books where danger is just a small part. In an adventure, the danger keeps the whole story moving.

How these stories work can follow a pattern. Some very old stories use a standard plot. A hero goes on a first set of adventures. Then the hero meets a lady. After that, the two are separated. The hero must then go on a second set of adventures. Finally, the hero and the lady are reunited. This pattern has lasted a long time. It even shows up in Hollywood movies today.

Adventure stories have changed a lot through history. In the past, stories often featured knights in armor. Later, they turned into stories about spies using high-tech tools. Many famous writers have shaped this genre. You might know names like Jules Verne or Rudyard Kipling. Others include Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Robert Louis Stevenson. These writers helped make adventure a popular way to tell stories.

Children have enjoyed adventure books since the 1800s. Early books include The Swiss Family Robinson from 1812. Other early examples are The Children of the New Forest and The Peasant and the Prince. During the Victorian era, many books were written just for boys. Later, writers like Arthur Ransome set adventures in Britain. Modern writers like Philip Pullman still write these stories. Some new books even talk about serious topics like warfare. The heart of the adventure stays the same.
