A thriller film is a type of movie made to spark excitement.

These films focus on building suspense for the audience. Suspense is that feeling of waiting for something big to happen. Filmmakers create tension by delaying things that seem inevitable. They might hide important facts from the viewer to keep them guessing. They also use scary situations where escape feels impossible. Often, a character's life is at risk during the story. This might happen when a hero enters a dangerous spot without knowing it.

Thrillers are very broad and can mix with many other movie types.

There are many ways to build a good thriller story. One common method is using fast chase scenes. Another way is through a mystery that the hero must solve. The main character often faces a hard task like an escape or a mission. Sometimes, the hero is an innocent person who is just running away. Other times, the hero is a professional like a spy or a detective. For example, the character James Bond is a famous professional hero. These stories often focus on speed, movement, and a sense of mystery.

Long before movies existed, people enjoyed stories that felt like thrillers. In the 1700s, Gothic novels like The Castle of Otranto used suspense. These old stories focused on big emotions and scary settings. Later, in the 1800s, sensation novels became very popular. These stories were often published in small parts called installments. They often ended with a "cliffhanger" to keep readers interested. Early detective stories, like those by Edgar Allan Poe, also helped shape the genre. Even stage plays used suspense to keep audiences watching closely.

Movies began to use these exciting ideas in new ways. In the early 1900s, "chase films" became very popular in Britain and France. One famous example from 1903 is The Great Train Robbery. These films focused on fast movement and clever robberies. Later, filmmakers like D.W. Griffith found new ways to build tension. He used a technique called cross-cutting to make movies more suspenseful. In 2001, the American Film Institute looked at the best heart-pounding films. They picked 100 great American movies that made people feel a rush of adrenaline.

It can be hard to say exactly what a thriller is. Some experts say the category is too broad or vague. Unlike Western movies, thrillers do not always have the same symbols like cowboys. They often overlap with other genres like horror or science fiction. A movie might be a science fiction thriller or an action thriller. Some people even think there is no such thing as a "pure" thriller. They might be a mix of many different styles. Even so, people love them for the way they make us feel alive. They turn a normal story into a wild adventure.
