They focus on the justice system and how it works. These stories follow lawyers, defendants, or plaintiffs. A defendant is a person accused of a crime. A plaintiff is the person bringing a case to court. Unlike detective stories, these shows focus on the courtroom. They might show a jury deciding a case. They might also show work done at law firms. These stories matter because they show how people face hard choices.

These stories often explore big questions about right and wrong. They show moral dilemmas that happen in real life. Some stories show people who were wrongly convicted of crimes. Other stories look at the mistakes made by police. A lawyer might have to defend someone they believe is guilty. This is a very hard job for any attorney. Some shows even talk about politics and social issues. For example, the film *Philadelphia* dealt with the fear of HIV/AIDS. The film *A Few Good Men* looked at following orders. These themes change as the world changes.

Legal dramas have been around for a very long time. One of the earliest American films was *Falsely Accused!* from 1908. Many great films came out in the 1950s and 1960s. The movie *12 Angry Men* is a very famous example. It was nominated for three Academy Awards. Another huge film is *To Kill a Mockingbird*. It won three Academy Awards at the 35th ceremony. It is even kept in the United States National Film Registry. This means the film is very important to history.

There are many different types of legal shows to watch. Some are serious, while others are comedies. Shows like *Law & Order* and *The Good Wife* are serious dramas. There are also legal comedies like *Ally McBeal*. Some shows are very popular, like *Suits* or *Better Call Saul*. You can find these shows in many different countries. For instance, the United Kingdom has shows like *Rumpole of the Bailey*. Some stories are even called legal thrillers when they are books. This helps people know what kind of story to expect.

It is important to know that movies are not always real. Most legal cases in the United States are settled out of court. Movies often skip this to show a big trial instead. They do this to make the story more exciting. Movies also show lawyers acting in extreme ways. They might show a hero or a dishonest person. In real life, lawyers must stay neutral to be fair. They work to make sure everyone gets a fair trial. Even Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor said these films can influence people.
