Special effects, often called FX, are visual illusions used to tell stories.

These tricks help make fictional events look real in movies or games. People use them in theater, television, and even amusement parks. There are two main kinds of effects. Mechanical effects, or practical effects, happen while the actors are filming. These include using real wind, rain, or fog on a set.

Filmmakers might also use scale models or puppets called animatronics. They even use special makeup to turn actors into non-human creatures.

Optical effects are different because they use camera tricks. These are often called photographic effects. One way to do this is by using a "matte" to change a background.

In the past, artists used cardboard to block parts of the film. Later, a man named Norman Dawn used a "glass shot" technique. He painted dark areas on glass to block light from the film. This helped artists draw backgrounds with the right size and perspective. This method became a standard way to make matte shots look natural.

History shows that these tricks have been around for a long time. In 1857, Oscar Rejlander made the first special effects image. He combined 32 different negatives into one single print. In 1895, Alfred Clark made the first motion picture effect.

He used a "stop trick" to show a queen being executed. He stopped the camera, swapped an actor for a dummy, and started filming again. Georges Méliès also discovered this trick by accident when his camera jammed. He became known as the "Cinemagician" because he made over 500 short films.

Many famous movies used special effects to create amazing worlds. In 1933, the movie King Kong used three-dimensional models.

Later, Eiji Tsuburaya helped create the Godzilla films in the 1950s. He used "suitmation," where an actor wears a monster costume. This helped start a huge "Monster Boom" in Japan. In 1968, the film 2001: A Space Odyssey used very detailed spaceship models. It also used a new technique called "slit-scan" to create space scenes. These movies showed how much technology could change what we see.

Today, technology has changed the way effects are made. Since the 1990s, computer-generated imagery, or CGI, has become very popular. CGI gives filmmakers more control over what happens on screen. It can make effects look very convincing and safe for the actors. Many old mechanical and optical tricks are now replaced by CGI. However, these new digital tools are just the latest step in a long history. From hand-painted colors to computer pixels, the goal remains the same. Filmmakers always want to find new ways to make us believe in magic.
