In the past, artists used cardboard to block parts of the film. Later, a man named Norman Dawn used a "glass shot" technique. He painted dark areas on glass to block light from the film. This helped artists draw backgrounds with the right size and perspective. This method became a standard way to make matte shots look natural.

History shows that these tricks have been around for a long time. In 1857, Oscar Rejlander made the first special effects image. He combined 32 different negatives into one single print. In 1895, Alfred Clark made the first motion picture effect.

In 1968, the film 2001: A Space Odyssey used very detailed spaceship models. It also used a new technique called "slit-scan" to create space scenes. These movies showed how much technology could change what we see.

Today, technology has changed the way effects are made. Since the 1990s, computer-generated imagery, or CGI, has become very popular. CGI gives filmmakers more control over what happens on screen. It can make effects look very convincing and safe for the actors. Many old mechanical and optical tricks are now replaced by CGI. These occur during live-action shooting to create real, physical changes on a set.

Mechanical effects involve many different physical processes. Filmmakers use mechanized props and scale models to represent large objects. They also use pyrotechnics to create explosions or controlled fires. Atmospheric effects create physical wind, rain, fog, or snow on the set. Some mechanical effects are part of the set design itself. For example, a car might be rigged to appear to drive by itself. An actor might use prosthetic make-up to look like a non-human creature. Even the use of animatronics, which are robotic puppets, falls under this category.

Optical effects, or photographic effects, rely on camera and light manipulation. These techniques create images through photographic processes. Some are done "in-camera," meaning they happen while the camera is filming. This can include multiple exposures or the Schüfftan process. Others are completed in post-production using an optical printer. An optical printer is a device where a projector aims into a camera lens.

This tool allows editors to combine different images to create new illusions. For instance, optical effects can place actors against a completely different background.

Filmmakers continue to use these tools to make the impossible feel real.
