They make fake events look real on screen. These tricks fall into two main groups. Mechanical effects happen while filming. People use small models, fake wind, or rain. They also use makeup to turn actors into creatures.

Optical effects use camera tricks. One way is to paint a background. This can place actors in new worlds.

In the past, filmmakers used the "stop trick." This meant stopping the camera to change something in the scene. A man named Georges Méliès used this to make people transform. He was called the "Cinemagician." Later, people used miniatures to show big things. They could show huge battles or giant monsters.

In Japan, Eiji Tsuburaya used actors in suits to play monsters. This helped start the "Monster Boom." Today, many people use computer images. This is called CGI. It helps make scenes look safe and real. It also helps make big movies at a lower cost.
