He was a physical medium. This means people believed he had special powers to connect with the spirit world. Many people thought he could speak with the dead. He was also known for making loud knocking sounds in houses. Some people even claimed he could float in the air.

He was a very well-known figure during his time.

During his séances, which are meetings to talk to spirits, many strange things happened. Home could make objects move from a distance. He could also play an accordion with just one hand while sitting in the dark.

Some people reported seeing ghostly hands or arms in the dim light. They even said these limbs felt icy cold to the touch. One person thought a spirit-hand was actually a false limb on Home's own arm. Another person believed Home used his foot to touch people in the dark.

Home was born in Scotland on March 20, 1833.

His mother, Elizabeth, was known as a seer. This means people believed she could see the future. Growing up, Home moved to the United States with his aunt and uncle. He lived in places like Connecticut and New York. When he was a teenager, he had a vision of his friend Edwin. Shortly after, he learned that Edwin had actually died.

Home became famous after a newspaper reported on his abilities in 1851.

He traveled to many cities like Hartford and Springfield. He did not ask for money for his work. Instead, he lived on gifts and donations from wealthy people. Some very important people, like the poet William Cullen Bryant, saw his shows. They were sure he was not tricking them. Once, five men weighing 850 pounds sat on a table, yet it still moved.

Not everyone believed that Home was telling the truth. The writer William Makepeace Thackeray called his work a foolish superstition.

Other people thought he was using clever tricks to fool the public. Home wanted to show that life continues after death. He even tried to study medicine to have a regular job. Sadly, he became ill with tuberculosis in 1854. He traveled to Europe to rest before he passed away in 1886.
