Many people followed him because of his teachings on love and service. He was born as Ratnakaram Sathyanarayana Raju on 23 November 1926. He grew up in the village of Puttaparthi in the Madras Presidency. His family belonged to a community of religious musicians. As a child, he was known for being very intelligent and talented in music and dance.

His life changed greatly when he was 14 years old. In March 1940, he was stung by a scorpion and lost consciousness. After he woke up, his behavior changed in many ways. He began to sing Sanskrit verses that he had never studied before. In May 1940, he told his family that he was the reincarnation of Shirdi Sai Baba. This was a famous saint who lived in Maharashtra. He said his mission was to spread righteousness and help the poor.

Followers believed Sathya Sai Baba had many miraculous abilities. They said he could make objects appear from thin air. These items included rings, necklaces, watches, and holy ash called Vibhuti. Some people believed he could heal the sick or be in two places at once. He also spoke about being all-knowing and all-powerful. While many people saw these as miracles, others made accusations of fraud. However, he was never charged with any crime.

He spent much of his life building things to help people. In 1954, he started a small free hospital in Puttaparthi. He also began a huge project in 1995 to bring drinking water to 1.2 million people. This project helped the drought-prone Rayalaseema region in Andhra Pradesh.

He also established temples in big cities like Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Chennai. He wanted to make sure everyone had their basic needs met.

Sathya Sai Baba died on 24 April 2011 at the age of 84. He had predicted he would live to be 96 years old. Some followers believe he was using a different way to count years. They used a lunar system based on stars to explain his age. Around 500,000 people came to his burial to say goodbye.
