He is known for making Ashtanga yoga popular around the world. This style uses flowing movements to connect different poses. Many people use it today as a way to exercise. His teaching method used a specific system of practices. This system included breathing exercises called pranayama. It also used core muscular locks known as bandhas. Students used visual focal points called drishti to stay focused. They also practiced different postures called asanas. These were connected through movements called vinyasas. This whole system was part of the method he taught. He wanted students to follow a tradition of passing knowledge from teacher to pupil.

Jois began his journey as a young student. In 1927, he saw a demonstration by T. Krishnamacharya. He became Krishnamacharya's student the very next day. Jois studied with him for many years in his home village. Later, he moved to Mysore to continue his studies. He studied with Krishnamacharya from 1932 until 1953. During this time, he read many old and sacred texts. One text mentioned by his teacher was the Yoga Korunta.

At first, only a few people came to learn his ways. A man from Belgium wrote a book about Jois in 1967. This helped bring many Westerners to India. He even traveled to America in 1975 to teach.

There are also difficult parts of his history to know. Some people say his physical adjustments were too strong. They said these adjustments caused pain or injury to students. It also became known that Jois sexually abused some of his students. These reports included both men and women. His grandson, Sharath Jois, has publicly apologized for this behavior. He expressed sadness over how his grandfather acted. Today, Jois's family members still lead yoga schools in Mysore.
