Ambani's journey began with very small steps. He was born in Chorwad, Gujarat, in 1932. He once worked as a petrol vendor at a gas station. In 1958, he returned to India to start his own business. He first worked with his cousin, Champaklal Damani. They started a business called Majin to trade spices and yarn. Their first office was just one small room. It only had one table, three chairs, and a telephone.

His business grew through many different stages. In 1965, he ended his partnership and worked alone. He founded Reliance Industries and took it public in 1977. This means people could buy shares in the company. Ambani also faced many difficult questions and accusations. Some people claimed he used unfair ways to change stock prices. In 1988, a group of brokers tried to sell Reliance shares. This led to the Bombay Stock Exchange closing for three days. An investigation by the Reserve Bank of India found no illegal acts.

Ambani had a long life of hard work. He suffered a stroke in February 1986. This stroke paralyzed his right hand. He later had another major stroke in June 2002. He died on 6 July 2002 at the age of 69. After he died, his sons, Mukesh and Anil, took over. The business was eventually split into two separate groups. Mukesh led Reliance Industries Limited as the CEO. Anil led the Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group as the chairperson.
