He was a businessman and a philanthropist, which means he gave much of his wealth to help others. He led the Tata Group as chairman from 1991 to 2012. He also served as the interim chairman from 2016 to 2017. Because of his great work, India gave him its highest honors. He received the Padma Vibhushan in 2008. This is the second-highest civilian honor in his country.

Tata's journey in business started in a very hands-on way. After he finished his studies, he joined the Tata Group in 1962. He did not start at the top. Instead, he began his work on the shop floor at Tata Steel. He later went to Harvard Business School for a special management program in 1975. In 1991, he became the chairman of Tata Sons. He worked to make the company much stronger and more organized. He created new rules so all the different parts of the company worked together well.

He wanted the Tata Group to be known all over the world. To do this, he bought several famous international brands. He acquired Tetley, which makes tea, and Jaguar Land Rover, which makes cars. He also bought Corus, a large steel company. These moves helped the group grow from a local Indian business into a global one. By the end of his time as leader, most of the money came from international sales.

Tata also cared about making things that regular people could use. He helped create the Tata Nano car. This car was made to be affordable for many average families in India. He also supported new ideas by investing in over 40 start-ups. Some of these were small new companies, like Ola Cabs or Teabox. He even helped start a company called Goodfellows. This company helps older people find new friends to talk to.

Helping others was a huge part of his life. He gave $50 million to Cornell University. This made him the largest international donor in that school's history. He also gave $50 million to Harvard Business School. This money helped build Tata Hall, a large building for students.
