Virji Vora was a very famous merchant from the city of Surat in India. He lived during the time of the Mughal Empire. Many historical records call him a "merchant prince." Some English records say he was the richest person in the world at that time. His wealth was estimated at 8 million rupees. That is a huge amount of money!

He did many different jobs to grow his wealth. He was a wholesale trader who sold goods in large amounts. He also worked in banking and lent money to others. This made him a very important part of the global economy.

His business worked by connecting many different places. Virji had branches in many parts of India. He also had offices in the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea. He even had business in South-East Asia.

He used agents to buy goods in important cities. For example, his agents bought spices in Golconda and Calicut. They also worked in big cities like Agra and Ahmedabad. This allowed him to control many different products. He could buy things in one place and sell them in another.

Virji was a master of trading many kinds of items. He dealt in spices like pepper, cardamom, and cloves. He also traded precious things like gold, ivory, and coral.

Sometimes, he would buy all the available stock of a product. This meant he could decide the price for everyone else. In 1625, he bought all the pepper brought by the Dutch to Surat. In 1648, he bought cloves at a low price using his large amount of cash. He was so successful that he was called a monopolist. This means he had total control over certain goods.

He also had very important relationships with people from far away. The British and Dutch East India Companies were his biggest customers.

He was a major creditor to the British. This means he lent them large amounts of money. In 1642, he offered a loan of 100,000 rupees to the English. He even helped pay for their sea voyages. The two groups often exchanged gifts to stay friendly. The English once gave him a special iron chest from Germany. They also gave him beautiful cloth and mirrors.

Virji was also a leader in his own community and religion. He was a Jain and a leader in religious affairs. He helped organize mass pilgrimages and build temples.

He worked with the Mughal governors of Surat on many public issues. Once, a leader named Hakim Sadra put him in jail. However, the Emperor Shah Jahan set him free. Later, a leader named Shivaji raided the city of Surat. Soldiers took much of Virji's gold, pearls, and diamonds. Even after this hard time, his family continued the business for many years.
