When he was a young boy, his brother Ajit introduced him to cricket to help him focus. He trained with a coach named Ramakant Achrekar at Shivaji Park. To make practice more exciting, the coach used a special game with coins. A coin was placed on top of the stumps during practice sessions. If Sachin was not dismissed, he earned the coin for himself. He kept thirteen of these coins as prized possessions from his training days.

His professional career started when he was just a teenager.
