He helped make modern yoga popular as a way to exercise. He created a style called Ashtanga yoga. This style uses flowing movements to connect different poses.

Jois began his studies as a young boy. He learned from a teacher named T. Krishnamacharya. Jois studied many old books about yoga. He also taught at the Sanskrit College in Mysore. In 1948, he started the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute. At first, only a few people came to learn. Soon, students traveled from far away. Many people came from America to study in India.

Some people have shared hard stories about Jois. They say he was not always kind to his students. They say he used improper touch during yoga adjustments. These adjustments are ways teachers help fix a student's pose. His grandson, Sharath Jois, has said he was sorry for this behavior.

Even with these reports, Jois had a big impact. He taught many people how to use yoga in their lives. His family still teaches yoga in Mysore today.
