Many of his followers believe he was a manifestation of Krishna. Others believe he was the highest form of the Supreme Being, known as Purushottama. He taught people to focus on moral and social betterment. He also emphasized ahimsa, which is the practice of being non-violent. By the age of seven, he had mastered many holy books like the Vedas and the Upanishads. At age eleven, he left home to travel across India and Nepal. During these travels, he used the name Nilkanth Varni. He spent seven years searching for a place to study deep spiritual truths. He even mastered a type of yoga called Astanga yoga during this time.

In 1799, his travels ended in the village of Loj in Gujarat. There, he met a senior disciple named Muktanand Swami. This meeting led him to meet a teacher named Ramanand Swami. In 1800, Ramanand Swami gave him the name Sahajanand Swami.

Before Ramanand Swami died, he named Sahajanand Swami as his successor. This change helped the group become the Swaminarayan Sampradaya. After a gathering where he taught a special mantra, he became known as Swaminarayan.

Swaminarayan established many important rules and buildings for his followers. He wrote a book of rules called the Shikshapatri in 1826.

He built six mandirs, which are temples, for people to worship. The first Swaminarayan Mandir was built in Ahmedabad on land from the British government.

In 1826, he also created two different groups to lead the faith. These groups were the Vadtal Gadi and the Ahmedabad Gadi. He appointed his nephews to lead these groups as acharyas.

His teachings touched many parts of daily life. He told his followers to avoid meat, alcohol, and drugs. He also spoke against animal sacrifices and criminal acts. Swaminarayan worked to help women and the poor in society.
