Ayyavazhi is a belief system from South India. The name means "Master's way" or "Father's way."

It is a dharmic belief because it focuses on dharma, which is a way of living rightly. Many followers believe in the life and teachings of Ayya Vaikundar. Some believe he was the Purna avatar of Narayana. An avatar is a god living in a human body.

Followers use two main holy books to guide them. The first is the Akilathirattu Ammanai, often called the Akilam.

The second is the Arul Nool. The Akilam was written by Hari Gopalan Seedar in 1841. He said God spoke to him while he slept. He felt he was writing down a story told by Narayana to Lakshmi.

Some say he was a person named Muthukutty. Others believe he was the god Vaikundar living in that body. In 1840, a special event called the Thuvayal thavasu occurred. This washing penance helped the faith become a distinct group.

It brought together many people from the society. Many followers came from the Nadar caste, but others joined too.

There are many special places for worship. The most sacred shrine is Swamithope Pathi.

It is the religious headquarters for the faith. There are also seven Pathis and seven Tangs in Travancore.
