He was born Venkataraman Iyer on December 30, 1879, in the village of Tiruchuzhi. He grew up in a traditional Brahmin family with three siblings. His father, Sundaram Iyer, worked as a court pleader. As a young boy, Venkataraman had a very good memory. He could remember Tamil poems after hearing them just once. He also tended to sleep very deeply. This life was very different from the one he would later lead.

At age sixteen, Venkataraman had a life-changing experience.

He felt a sudden fear of death. This fear led to a powerful feeling or force inside him. He began to ask himself, "Who is it that dies?" He realized his body might die, but this inner force remained. He called this force his true Self. He also saw it as a connection to the god Shiva. This event changed how he saw the whole world. He lost interest in school and his old life.

In 1896, he traveled to the holy mountain called Arunachala.

He lived there for the rest of his life. At first, he stayed in temple vaults and shrines. He often sat in deep meditation for long periods. Sometimes he was so still that he did not notice bugs biting him. A man named Palaniswami became his helper. Palaniswami cooked for him and helped care for his needs. Eventually, many people began to visit him at the mountain.

His main teaching was a method called self-enquiry.

This means asking questions to find your true identity. In 1902, a man named Sivaprakasam Pillai asked him fourteen questions. These questions helped shape his famous teachings. A scholar named Ganapati Sastri called him "Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi" in 1907. This name became how most people knew him. He also taught that devotion or surrender to the Self was important. His ideas spread to the West starting in the 1930s.

Ramana Maharshi lived in many different places on the mountain. He stayed in Virupaksha Cave for seventeen years. He also lived in the Skandashram Cave with his family.

People came from far away for "darshan." This means they wanted to be in his presence. They could sit in silence to receive spiritual instruction. An ashram, or a community for holy living, grew around him. He passed away on April 14, 1950. His life remains a major part of Hindu tradition today.
