He founded a group called the Nath monastic movement in India. Many people call him a Maha-yogi, which means a great yogi. He is one of nine holy masters known as the Navnath. These masters follow a spiritual line that starts with Shiva.

Gorakhnath did not focus on just one single theory. Instead, he believed that searching for truth is a natural goal for all people. He taught that yoga and spiritual discipline are important ways to reach a state called samadhi. This state is a kind of spiritual liberation or freedom.

How did Gorakhnath teach? He believed in the guidance of a Guru. A Guru is a realized master who helps a student. He championed the use of yoga to find deep truth. Some scholars think he helped start the practice of Hatha yoga. Others disagree about where Hatha yoga truly began.

However, many experts say his connection to these practices is very strong. He also taught about nondualism. This is the idea that a person can see themselves in all living things. This belief is found in his famous text, the Siddha Siddhanta Paddhati.

Historians have different ideas about when he lived. Some estimates place him in the 11th or 12th century. Other researchers think he lived in the 13th or even the 14th century.

Other stories say he was from the eastern regions like Assam. These stories help show how much people respect his memory.

Gorakhnath left a big mark on many places. The city of Gorakhpur in India is named after him.

In Nepal, he is a patron saint. The Gurkha people even take their name from him. In the state of Tamil Nadu, he is known as Korakkar. He is one of the 18 esteemed Siddhars in that tradition. He is even linked to the Dang valley in Nepal. There, a king named Ratnaparikshak was once his student. This king became a famous saint known as Ratnanath.

His influence can still be seen in many traditions today. Many of his followers run community kitchens called langars. These kitchens provide free meals to people on journeys.
