It began in the Punjab region around the end of the 15th century. Today, between 25 and 30 million people follow this faith. They are known as Sikhs, which means "students" or "disciples."

This faith is quite young compared to other major religions. It grew from the spiritual teachings of Guru Nanak. He was the very first guru to lead the community.

Sikhs believe in one God, often called Waheguru.

They use the phrase Ik Onkar to show that there is only one creator. This creator is seen as being inside everything in the universe. This idea is called panentheism. God is described as being timeless and without a shape. Some Sikhs also use music to feel this divine presence. They might sing holy songs called kirtan or meditate quietly.

The history of Sikhism includes ten human gurus. Guru Nanak started this line of teachers. Nine other gurus followed him over many years. The tenth guru was Guru Gobind Singh.

He made a very important decision for the faith. He named the Guru Granth Sahib as the successor to the gurus. This holy book is now considered the 11th and living guru.

This ended the line of human teachers.

Sikhs follow many important rules for living a good life. They believe in being honest and working hard. Helping others through selfless service is called seva.

They also strive for justice for all people. Some Sikhs wear five special items called the five Ks. One of these is kesh, which means uncut hair. Because of this, many Sikh men wear a turban.

These items help identify them as Sikhs.

In the past, Sikhs faced many hard times. Some rulers treated them poorly because of their beliefs. Two gurus, Guru Arjan and Guru Tegh Bahadur, were even executed.

To protect their right to practice their faith, a group called the Khalsa was formed in 1699. Members of the Khalsa aim to be "saint-soldiers." This means they try to be both spiritual and brave. They want to protect freedom and do what is right.
