A gurdwara is a special place where people of the Sikh faith gather to worship.

The name comes from Punjabi words that mean a "gateway" to the guru. This name suggests it is a place where the guru can be reached. People from all religions and backgrounds are welcome to enter. You can often spot a gurdwara from far away by a tall flagpole. This flagpole holds the Nishan Sahib, which is the Sikh flag.

Inside the building, there is a main hall called a Darbar Sahib. The most important part of this room is the Guru Granth Sahib. This is the holy book that Sikhs follow. It sits on an elevated throne in a central spot.

A person called a granthi may lead the service. They can sing, recite, and explain the verses from the holy book. Some gurdwaras also have a community kitchen called a langar. Here, volunteers serve free lacto-vegetarian food to everyone.

Long ago, these places were known as dharamsals. The very first one was built by Guru Nanak Dev in 1521. It was located in Kartarpur, near the Ravi River.

These early dharamsals were often just one simple, humble room. They were built so people could hear spiritual talks or sing hymns. As the Sikh population grew, the sixth guru, Guru Hargobind, introduced the word "gurdwara." This helped describe the new way these centers were growing and changing.

Many famous gurdwaras were founded by the Sikh gurus over many years. For example, Guru Angad Dev founded Khadur Sahib in 1539.

Guru Ram Das established Sri Amritsar in 1577. There are also five very important gurdwaras called the Panj Takht. These are seen as the main centers of power for the faith. One of these is the Akal Takht Sahib, which was set up in 1609. It is located within the complex of the Golden Temple in Amritsar, India.

Today, gurdwaras do much more than just provide a place for prayer. They act as important centers for the whole community. Many have libraries to hold Sikh literature or schools to teach Gurmukhi.

Some even have medical rooms, playgrounds, or even repair shops. Some historical sites also have a sarovar, which is a pool for bathing. These buildings help keep the traditions and teachings of the faith alive for everyone.
