The Guru Granth Sahib is the central holy scripture for people of the Sikh faith.

It is much more than just a collection of writings. Sikhs view this text as their eternal and living Guru. This means they look to it for spiritual guidance and authority. For a long time, Sikhism had a line of ten human Gurus. After the tenth Guru passed away, the role of leader moved to this sacred text. Because it is seen as a living being, each page is called an ang. This word means "limb" in English.

The book is a beautiful mix of poetry and music. It contains 1,430 angs, or pages. There are also 5,894 shabads, which are rhythmic compositions. These hymns are organized into 31 main rāgas. A rāga is a specific type of musical form used in north India. This helps the reader or singer know the right melody to use.

The text uses the Gurmukhi script. It also includes many different languages. These include Punjabi, Sanskrit, Hindi, Persian, and Arabic. Some people call this mix of languages Sant Bhasha.

The history of this scripture began with the fifth Guru, Guru Arjan. He wanted to create an official and true collection of hymns. He sent helpers across the Indian subcontinent to find the right writings. He worked with a scribe named Bhai Gurdas to edit the text. This first version was called the Adi Granth. Guru Arjan finished this work on 29 August 1604.

He installed it in the Golden Temple in Amritsar on 1 September 1604. Baba Buddha was chosen as the very first Granthi, or reader, at the temple.

Over time, the scripture grew to include more voices. The tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, added hymns from his father, Guru Tegh Bahadur. He did this around 1704 while staying at Damdama Sahib. This addition helped turn the Adi Granth into the Guru Granth Sahib.

The book includes writings from six Sikh Gurus. It also features teachings from fourteen Hindu Bhakti saints. One Muslim Sufi saint, Sheikh Farid, is also included. These different people all shared similar ideas. They wrote about mercy, love, and belief in one god.

The teachings in the Guru Granth Sahib focus on a fair society. It speaks of divine freedom and justice without oppression.

This vision helps guide how Sikhs live their lives today. The scripture is kept in a Sikh gurdwara, which is a temple. When people enter, they often show respect by prostrating before the text. Even though it was written many centuries ago, its message remains central to the faith. It continues to serve as the ultimate spiritual authority for millions of people.
