Scholars believe he was born on April 15, 1563. He became the Guru in 1581 after his father died. This role kept the leadership within the Sodhi family. His life helped shape how the Sikh community grew and lived.

One of his biggest jobs was creating a holy book. He compiled the Adi Granth, which was the first official Sikh scripture.

This book contains hymns from previous Gurus and other saints. He placed this sacred text in the Harimandir Sahib. He also finished building the Darbar Sahib at Amritsar. This site includes a special pool called a sarovar. He helped found new settlements like Kartarpur, Hargobindpur, and Tarn Taran.

Guru Arjan also organized how the community shared its resources. He used a system called the masand system to help people. He suggested that Sikhs practice dasvandh, which means giving one-tenth of their income. This could be money, goods, or even service.

These funds helped build gurdwaras, which are places of worship. The money also paid for langars, or shared communal kitchens. This helped ensure that everyone in the community was cared for.

His life faced many hard challenges from the Mughal Empire. The Emperor Jahangir ordered his arrest because of political reasons. Some say the Emperor thought Arjan supported a rebel named Khusrau Mirza.

Jahangir also asked the Guru to convert to Islam. Guru Arjan refused to change his faith or remove hymns from his book. He was imprisoned in the Lahore Fort. This period was a very difficult time for the Sikh people.

In 1606, Guru Arjan died while in Mughal custody. This event is known as his martyrdom.
