Jayadeva was a famous Sanskrit poet living during the 12th century.

He is best known for his epic poem called the Gita Govinda. This poem tells a beautiful story about the love between Krishna and the gopi, Radha. It takes place during a rite of spring. The poem shows that Radha is even greater than Krishna. Because of this, the text is very important to the Bhakti movement in Hinduism.

Many people use his words to create beautiful art and music. In the Jagannatha temple of Puri, the Gita Govinda is sung every single night. This happens during a ritual called Badasinghara.

The songs use traditional Odissi music styles called ragas and talas. For example, they might use the Mangala Gujjari style. In the past, dancers known as Maharis or Devadasis performed these songs. Now, the temple remains a very important place for this ancient music.

We can also find Jayadeva's poetry in beautiful objects. Some people write his poems on palm leaves. They can even shape these leaves into a fish or a garland.

The Odisha State Museum holds 210 of these special manuscripts. Some are illustrated with art, while others are not. You can even find versions written on ivory, bamboo, or handmade paper. Craftsmen still stitch palm leaves together to make them open like a chart.

We do not know everything about how Jayadeva lived. He was born into a Brahmin family to parents named Bhojadeva and Ramadevi.

He may have been born in a village called Kindubilva. Some people think this is Kenduli Sasana in West Bengal or a place in Odisha. He likely studied Sanskrit poetry at a school called Kurmapataka near Konark. He was a wandering poet who traveled through eastern India.

Jayadeva's work has traveled far beyond his own time. Two of his hymns are actually inside the Guru Granth Sahib.

This is the main holy book for the Sikh religion. These hymns use a mix of Sanskrit and eastern Apabhramsha. Some records say his work had a big influence on Guru Nanak. This shows how one poet's words can connect many different cultures and beliefs over hundreds of years.
