It is a central book for people who follow Vaishnavism. This group focuses their devotion on the god Vishnu. Many people also call this text the Srimad Bhagavatam. The name Bhagavata means a follower or worshipper of Vishnu. The word Purana itself means something that is ancient or old. It can also mean something that is complete.

This book is special because it helps people learn about spiritual life.

The text works by using many different types of stories and talks. It is made of twelve books called cantos. These books contain 335 chapters and 18,000 verses in total. The stories are often non-linear, which means they do not always go in a straight line. They use dialogues to explain big ideas. One main idea is Bhakti Yoga, which is a way of showing loving devotion.

This devotion is meant to be for its own sake. It is not done just to get rewards or worldly things.

History tells us that the book was written in the Sanskrit language. Many traditions say that a person named Veda Vyasa wrote it. Scholars study exactly when it was made. Some believe it was written between 500 CE and 1000 CE. Others think parts of it might be even older, from the Gupta period.

There is a debate about where it started. Some scholars think it came from North India. Other thinkers believe it might have started in South India.

The book covers many different subjects that people find interesting. It discusses how the universe was created and how it works. It also talks about astronomy and the stars.

You can find information about music, dance, and yoga inside its pages. The tenth book is very famous and widely studied. It contains about 4,000 verses. This book was even the first Purana to be translated into a European language. That happened in 1788 with a French translation of a Tamil version.

This text connects to many other ways of thinking in India. It uses ideas from traditions called Vedanta and Samkhya. Different groups of followers have their own ways of explaining the book. For example, the school of Ramanuja lived in the eleventh century. The school of Madhvacharya lived in the thirteenth century.

Each group writes its own notes to show how the book supports their views. This shows how much people have thought about these stories over many years.
