These texts belong to both Hinduism and Jainism. The word Purana comes from the Sanskrit word for "ancient" or "former." These books are like a giant library of knowledge. They use many layers of symbols to tell their stories. Many people find them fascinating because they cover so many topics. What is inside these books is very diverse. You can read about the stars and how the planets move. Some parts teach about medicine and how to use plants. Other parts talk about grammar, math, and even how to build things. They tell stories about many different people. You might read about gods, goddesses, kings, or brave heroes. They also share folk tales and stories about love. Even things like how to travel to holy places are included.

People have many different ideas about how these books started. Some traditions say a wise man named Vyasa put them together. He is a famous narrator who is also linked to the Mahabharata. Other scholars think many different authors wrote them over hundreds of years. Some stories say the books came from the breath of great beings. Others say they grew from stories told by poets and priests. These books were spoken out loud long before they were ever written down.
