The Panchatantra is a famous collection of ancient Indian stories.

These tales use animal characters to teach people about life. These animals act like humans by showing different personality traits. For example, a lion might be strong but lacks wit. A jackal is often shown as being very crafty.

The stories help readers understand a concept called niti. Niti means the wise conduct of life. This wisdom helps people navigate the world with care.

Each book in the collection has a specific theme. The first book, Mitra-bheda, is about the loss of friends. It features a jackal named Damanaka who tries to break up alliances. The second book, Mitra-lābha, focuses on the winning of friends. It tells the adventures of a crow, a mouse, a turtle, and a deer.

These animals have very different skills and habits. They show that weak animals can succeed by working together. The other books cover war, peace, and the dangers of hasty actions.

Many stories are told using a special structure. One character might tell a story to another character. That story might then contain even more stories inside it. This makes the tales work like a set of Russian dolls.

This layering can go three or four levels deep. The books also include short, wise verses. These verses often come from sacred or important sources. They add beauty and wit to the simple animal tales.

Scholars are still studying exactly when these stories were first written. The text was originally written in the Sanskrit language. Some experts believe the stories date back to around 300 CE. Others think the individual fables might be much older.

One famous name linked to the book is Vishnusharma. He is described as an old teacher for three princes. However, most scholars think this name might be made up. The true author of these ancient tales remains a mystery.

These stories have traveled far beyond the borders of India. There are 200 different versions in more than 50 languages. One version reached Europe during the 11th century.
