Chaturanga is an ancient strategy game from India.

Its name means "having four limbs" or "four parts." This name comes from the Sanskrit language. It also describes a battle formation from the Indian epic, the Mahabharata. The game acts like a small battle on a board. It uses pieces that represent the four parts of an Indian army. These parts are the elephantry, the chariotry, the cavalry, and the infantry.

Players also use a raja, or king, and a mantri, or minister, to lead. This game was a way to show a conflict between two armies.

To play, you use a board called an ashtāpada. This board is an 8x8 grid without checkers.

The game starts with one side moving first. The main goal is to checkmate the opponent's raja. You can also win by reducing the other side to just a "bare king." This means you capture every piece except the king. If a player can also reduce the other side to a bare king on the next move, the game is a draw. Some old rules say a stalemate might even be a win for the player who is stalemated.

Each piece has its own way of moving across the board. The ratha, or chariot, moves in straight lines like a rook in chess. The ashva, or horse, moves just like a knight. The padati, or foot-soldier, moves like a pawn but cannot take a double step on its first move. The mantri, or minister, moves one step diagonally.

The gaja, or elephant, is a bit of a mystery. Some ancient texts say it jumps two squares diagonally. Other sources say it moves one step forward or one step diagonally. These different moves show how the game changed over time.

Historians have studied the origins of this game for a long time. The earliest clear mention is from the Gupta Empire in north India. This was around the sixth century AD. Some people believe the game might be even older. They point to pieces found in the city of Lothal from 2000 to 3000 BC. A writer named Banabhatta mentioned the game in his work around AD 625. Another text called the Bhavishya Purana also describes it. These old records help us understand how the game began.

Chaturanga is a very important ancestor for many games we play today.

It is the common ancestor of modern chess. It also led to many other famous games. These include xiangqi in China and shogi in Japan. Other related games are janggi in Korea and makruk in Thailand. It even spread to Cambodia as ouk chatrang. The game traveled to Persia as chatrang. From there, it eventually reached Europe in the late Middle Ages. It is a game that connects many different cultures through history.
