This game was very important to people in the past. It was played by kings and famous leaders. It helped people learn about strategy and focus. Today, we still play chess because of this old game.

In shatranj, players use different pieces on a board. Each piece has its own special way to move. There is a shah, which means king. The rukh moves like a chariot. The asb moves like a horse.

The piyadeh moves like a soldier or pawn. There is also a ferz, or counselor. This piece moves only one square diagonally. It was much weaker than the queen in modern chess.

Another piece was called the pīl, or elephant.

This piece jumped two squares diagonally. It could only reach certain spots on the board. In Europe, this piece became the bishop. People thought the shape looked like a religious hat. This happened because the pieces were carved with two points. This helped the game change as it moved to new lands.

History shows how the game traveled across the world. It started in India and moved to the Persian Empire.

During the reign of Khosrau I, a king received a special set. This set had sixteen emerald pieces and sixteen ruby pieces.

Later, the game spread through the Islamic world. It reached Spain and Sicily in the 10th century. From there, it moved into Europe to become modern chess.

Persian players added rules that we still use today. They started to warn when a king was under attack. This is like saying "check" in our games now. They also made a rule that a king could not move into danger. This meant the king could not be captured. Instead, the game ended with a checkmate.
