Shatranj is an ancient game of skill. It is a very old form of chess. Many people believe it started in India. It came from a game called chaturanga.

In Persia, the game became very popular. One king once received a special set. It had sixteen pieces made of emeralds. It also had sixteen pieces made of rubies.

The pieces in shatranj were a bit different. There was a shah, which means king. There was a ferz, or counselor. The ferz was a weak piece. It moved only one square diagonally. There was also a rukh, or chariot.

Another piece was the pīl, or elephant. It jumped two squares diagonally. In Europe, this piece became the bishop. People thought the shape looked like a hat.

Persian players added important rules. They started to warn when a king was under attack. This is like saying "check" today. This helped the game last longer. Shatranj later spread to Europe. It helped create the modern chess we play now.
